Essential Functions

  • Performs initial inspections of establishments applying for licensure by the Bureau under a variety of acts including the Illinois Animal Welfare Act and Illinois Livestock Auction Market Law.
  • Performs annual inspections of licensed establishments.
  • Investigates alleged complaints of inhumane treatment or improper care of animals.
  • Enforces the rules and statutes for which the Bureau has responsibility pertaining to dead animal disposal.
  • Investigates unlicensed establishments to determine if there is a necessity to license.
  • Prepares and submits inspection reports and follows-up on any investigation initiated by employee or assigned by the Bureau.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of two years of college with course work in animal husbandry, law enforcement or a related field.
  • Requires one year of professional experience in a compliance enforcement capacity in an agriculture industry or evidence of completion of an agency approved training program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers working knowledge of procedures utilized in gathering and assembling evidence, in determining compliance and in initiating formal correction action on violations.
  • Prefers working knowledge of licenses, health records and certificates and record keeping practices required for the operation of animal facilities.
  • Prefers elementary knowledge of policies and procedures regarding the inspection of animals and the investigation of complaints and suspected violations.
  • Prefers experience applying various laws, rules, and regulations to determine noncompliance and prepare and maintain routine records and reports.

  • Requires a valid driver's license and the ability to operate a state vehicle in performance of duties.
  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of duties.
  • Requires residency in Kane, DeKalb McHenry, Cook, Kendall or Will County.
  • Requires the ability to complete a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
