The Camera 2 position is responsible for capturing high-quality footage of a live production, ensuring that all moments are perfectly framed and recorded. This role requires experience with professional camera equipment, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, cinematic live theater environment. The Camera 2 position works closely with the Camera 1, Camera Switcher and other production team members to create visually compelling content that enhances the overall experience for the audience. This position will be clearly seen on stage during live performances.
Casting Requirement: Must be between 5’ 0” – 5’ 9” Tall, with a light to medium frame.
Key Responsibilities:
● Camera Operation: Operate professional video cameras during live performances to capture the show from various angles, ensuring that all critical moments and illusions are clearly and creatively documented.
● Shot Composition: Work with the Director to plan and execute the best camera angles, movements, and framing to highlight the performance and create a dynamic visual experience.
● Live Production: Adjust camera settings on the fly, including focus, exposure, and zoom, to adapt to changing lighting conditions and fast-paced action during the show.
● Technical Maintenance: Perform regular checks and maintenance on camera equipment to ensure it is in optimal working condition before each performance.
● Communication: Maintain clear communication with the Director, Technical Director, and other camera operators to coordinate shots and ensure smooth transitions during live filming.
● Lifting and Physical Labor: Must be able to; lift, pull, and push items over 30 lbs regularly, stand for long periods of time, moving quickly in dark spaces, exposure to lighting that may have a strobe effect, and breathing air with haze or fog effects present.
● Cue Execution: Will perform basic ques on stage while not operating a camera, positioning tables or scenery on an as needed and assigned basis, in front of a live audience.
● Camera Care: Perform basic cleaning and routine maintenance on show cameras and related equipment, ensuring optimum functionality and performance in show conditions. Preset and strike video equipment and peripherals daily.
● Rehearsals: Attend rehearsals to familiarize yourself with the show's flow, blocking, and key moments, allowing for better anticipation and execution of camera movements during the live show.
● Safety and Compliance: Follow all safety protocols, especially when operating camera equipment in confined or elevated spaces. Adhere to venue and production safety guidelines at all times.
● Problem-Solving: Quickly and efficiently address any technical issues or equipment malfunctions during the show to avoid disruptions in recording.
Qualifications:
● Extensive experience as a camera operator, particularly in live theater, or a similar precision-based (non-event style) highly choreographed stage show. Cinematic filming experience is a plus.
● Strong understanding of camera operation, including manual focus, exposure control, and various camera movements.
● Experience working with professional video cameras and related equipment (e.g., tripods, gimbals, rigs).
● Ability to work under pressure and adapt to the fast-paced environment of a live show.
● Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to take direction and collaborate effectively.
● Physical capability to operate and transport camera equipment, including working in confined or elevated spaces.
● Knowledge of video production and post-production workflows is a plus.
● A passion for cinema and filmmaking is a plus.
Certifications:
● OSHA 10 certification is required.
● First Aid certification is a plus.
Schedule: This position requires a regular part-time schedule released quarterly, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the performance calendar. The show call time is from 5:30-9:30PM on Tuesday through Saturday. Priority over other opportunities must be given to the assigned show schedule.
