Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Senior Director of Facility Services, this position provides journey-level carpentry work in the design, construction, repair and installation of structures and fixtures at Wisconsin State Fair Park. The scope of this position is varied and ranges from constructing simple wooden display props to designing and constructing portable event ticket booths. This position requires an individual with a high-level of carpentry skill with the ability to work independently and efficiently manage time, while adhering to strict deadlines. This position will provide oversight to carpenter shop assistants.
EMPLOYMENT TYPE Full-Time, permanent position in the unclassified service of the State of Wisconsin.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS This unclassified craftsworker’s rate of pay will be $46.42, $47.17, or $47.91 per hour, based upon the amount of vacation leave selected . Overtime compensation may be approved during certain periods of the year. This p osition includes a comprehensive fringe benefits package , including pension, health insurance, and paid time off .

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Direct and instruct carpentry work assignments of limited-term employees (LTEs) and any full-time staff that are assigned specific work tasks in the shop
- Act as the project manager of all incoming work orders for the carpenter shop and assign tasks accordingly
- Accurately measure and mark materials to prepare them for construction, installation, or repair
- Study and understand specifications presented in blueprints, sketches or building plans and be able to translate them into a final product
- Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power tools to complete the work
- Assemble and fasten materials to make structures or props for various departments
- Build, install or repair cabinets, doors, windows, flooring, and other wooden fixtures used in buildings
- Construct tables, tool storage huts, livestock ramps, stages, and other event-related items
- Remove damaged or defective wood and materials from equipment and structures to repair or replace
- Cut, fit, install, replace, or repair exterior and interior moldings, baseboards, doorframes, wood and metal framed partitions and similar finishing or trim work
- Work cooperatively with managers from other departments to design and build structures and props. This includes working closely with the engineer to ensure all building and safety codes, regulations and guidelines are followed
- Operate in a safe and reasonable manner while using power equipment, hand tools, and other tools of the trade
- Provide safety training on carpentry hand tools and power equipment used during construction, repair and installation work
- Explain the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in a workshop environment and ensure staff properly use the equipment
- Maintain tools and equipment in the carpenter’s shop and keep the shop area in a safe, clean condition
- Maintain appropriate shop inventory levels and make necessary purchases according to the state procurement guidelines
- Prepare cost estimates of projects for departments
- Maintain accurate records of projects, work orders, status and progress reports
- Make recommendations on the purchase of carpentry tools and equipment
- Comply with all safety and occupational health rules and regulations
- Attend safety meetings and training programs scheduled by the agency
- Perform other special assignments and tasks as directed
QUALIFICATIONS - Must meet the journey-level requirements of the carpenter trade or equivalent training and experience (see Special Notes section)
- Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices of the carpentry trade
- Skill in the use of all tools and machines common in carpentry work
- Knowledge of all types of carpentry techniques for construction and repair
- Thorough knowledge of the safety requirements, state code and general orders of the Department of Safety and Professional Services relating to carpentry
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary precautions in the carpentry trade
- Ability to read, interpret and work from plans, blueprints, involved drawings and sketches
- Basic leadership skills and ability to direct and instruct assistants in the trade
- Ability to work independently, setting own work priorities to meet the demands of the position
- Thorough knowledge of and ability to perform basic math functions such as measurements, area, percentages, multiplication, and total sum
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds with or without accommodation
- Must be able to walk up and down stairs, climb ladders, crawl, stoop, crouch, turn and kneel
- Must be able and willing to work at heights up to 90 feet on walkways, on roofs, and on lift equipment
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License
SPECIAL NOTES The candidate must be able to work all 11 days of the annual Wisconsin State Fair. Prior to appointment to this position, the candidate will be subject to a comprehensive criminal background check.
The candidate will be required to provide proof of one of the following:
- A completed apprenticeship approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a Carpenter
- Formal recognition of status by the appropriate international or local trade organization or some type of similar formal validation of journeyman status as a Carpenter
- Proof of equivalent training and experience
Equivalent training and experience for this craft: Evidence of having performed the following activities for at least 6,240 hours: (1) Form building and rough framing = 3,000 hours; (2) outside finishing = 800 hours; (3) inside finishing = 800 hours; (4) interior systems = 600 hours; (5) hardware fitting = 320 hours; (6) miscellaneous repairs and setting of machinery and equipment, welding and safety = 320 hours; and (7) related instruction = 400 hours. Such evidence may include letters or statements from past customers/clients and/or employers.
