What we need

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to oversee the maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of our high-volume, automated pick, pack, and ship distribution facility. This role will focus on ensuring the reliability and performance of computerized conveyor systems equipped with cameras, scanners, sortation systems, and automated packaging equipment. The Mechanical Engineer will work closely with the Maintenance, IT, and Operations teams to minimize downtime, improve system efficiency, and support continuous improvement initiatives. This position reports directly to the Operations Manager.

Alphacomm custom designs, manufactures and distributes wireless accessories to over 18,000 points of distribution, primarily in the Prepaid wireless market in North America. Alphacomm leads the wireless industry in the number of carrier brands managed and is the first to market carrier-licensed accessory portfolios for over fifty devices launched annually. In-house brands, Quikcell and BosBos , are leading brands designed and manufactured by Alphacomm for the Prepaid channel.

Responsibilities

System Maintenance & Troubleshooting:

• Maintain, diagnose, and repair conveyor systems, motors, gearboxes, bearings, rollers, pneumatic actuators, and automated sortation equipment.

• Monitor and optimize system performance using data from cameras, sensors, PLCs, and SCADA.

• Conduct root cause analysis for equipment failures and implement corrective actions to reduce downtime.

• Partner with IT and Controls Engineers to troubleshoot automation software, PLCs, and camera-based scanning systems.

• Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance programs to enhance system longevity.

Engineering & Process Improvement:

• Design and implement mechanical modifications or upgrades to improve system reliability and efficiency.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze workflow bottlenecks and material handling inefficiencies.

• Assist in evaluating and integrating new automation technologies and conveyor system enhancements.

• Ensure compliance with OSHA, ANSI, and other safety and regulatory requirements for conveyor and material handling systems.

Project Management & Documentation:

• Lead small- to medium-scale engineering projects, including equipment installations, modifications, and system expansions.

• Develop and maintain accurate documentation, including technical drawings, maintenance SOPs, and parts inventory records.

• Provide training and technical guidance to maintenance personnel on best practices for mechanical systems maintenance.

• Work with external vendors and contractors on specialized maintenance and system upgrades.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).

• 3-7 years of experience in a high-volume distribution, logistics, or manufacturing environment with automated conveyor systems.

• Strong knowledge of mechanical components, hydraulics, pneumatics, and motor-driven systems.

• Experience troubleshooting automated material handling systems, PLC-controlled conveyors, and camera-based scanning systems.
• Experience using Allen Bradley controller and Studio 5000 software strongly preferred.

• Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks) for mechanical design and layout modifications.

• Familiarity with CMMS software for maintenance tracking and scheduling.

• Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and control schematics.

• Strong problem-solving skills with a hands-on, practical approach to engineering challenges.

• Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate across departments.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with industrial automation, robotics, or vision-based quality control systems.

• Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or TPM methodologies.

• Previous work with high-speed sortation systems (e.g., Dematic, Intelligrated, Vanderlande, or similar technologies).

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to work in a fast-paced, industrial environment with exposure to machinery, noise, and occasional heavy lifting.

• Willingness to work on-call or extended hours as needed for critical system repairs.

• Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and using industrial safety equipment.
