Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) has established the Advanced Technology Innovation Pipeline (ATIP) to deliver revolutionary improvements in cost savings, time-to-market, fleet availability, and reactor performance to the US Navy by evaluating and developing new technologies. The Applied Informatics unit in the ATIP organization is seeking an engineer to accelerate the development and deployment of digital engineering practices, including efforts to integrate modeling and sensing to improve the quality and quantity of data available to improve reactor plant performance, develop alternate or optimized plant operations or maintenance programs, and reduce reactor plant size or cost.

The successful candidate will collaborate extensively within Applied Informatics and across organizational boundaries within NNL. They will be responsible for performing market research, performing proof of principle analyses, and planning and executing research and development tasks leveraging internal resources and external subcontracts in one or more of the following technology areas:

  • Digital Engineering tool integration
  • Integrated plant and plant system concept design and analysis support using an integrated digital environment
  • Model-sensor-fusion development and application
  • Development and application of system and component digital twins
  • Sensor system development and integration
  • Data acquisition and signal processing

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 4 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 2 years of relevant experience; or a PhD degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field; or Currently or previously NPE qualified; or CTE/ACRS and 1 year EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and 1 year as SRE.

Pay Range

$83,600.00 - $130,700.00 annually Salary information provided is a general guide line only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
