Senior Director of Athletics & Recreation – Taunton Clubhouse
Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South is the preeminent youth development organization in Southeastern Massachusetts, serving more than 2,500 youth annually from infancy to adulthood from nearly 50 zip codes at our Clubhouses in Brockton and Taunton, our 100-acre Camp Riverside property, and at several community extension sites across the region. Reporting to the Vice President of Program Impact, the Senior Director of Athletics & Recreation provides leadership, direction, and operational oversight to the sports, wellness, and recreation departments across Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South Clubhouses and Camp Riverside. This role involves developing and executing strategic plans aligning with the Club’s overall Strategic Plan and the organization's vision, mission, and objectives. The Senior Director of Athletics & Recreation ensures that key revenue-generating activities are developed and executed to meet the needs of both program quality and the broader community. They will foster stakeholder relationships, design and implement impactful programs, manage financial resources, provide leadership to the Clubhouse teams, and serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The Senior Director of Athletics & Recreation will ensure the Clubhouses meet or exceed programmatic, membership, and financial goals, while providing remarkable leadership in areas of member experience and participation, new membership growth, program evaluation, training, staff team supervision, and in-Club business performance.
The Senior Director of Athletics & Recreation will provide daily support to a team of 10+ part-time team members and numerous volunteers and provide ongoing leadership, motivation, and development. They are responsible for casting, coaching, communication, alignment, and holding staff accountable to the collective Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South expectations. The Senior Director of Athletics & Recreation can expect to work nights/weekends regularly. This is a new role at BGCMS with tremendous room for growth and career acceleration.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
● Lead the development of the department’s strategic plan and ensure alignment with the Clubs’ overall strategy.
● Oversee the development of sports portfolio-specific plans within Athletics, Wellness, and Recreation.
● Model relationship-building skills in all interactions with staff, volunteers, members, and the community.
● Cultivate, foster, and advance key strategic partnerships to enhance the Club’s work in the community.
● Managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including community partners and facility users.
● Provide day-to-day leadership and performance management of the Athletics, Wellness, and Recreational staff teams.
● Develop, manage, and monitor operating budgets and meet or exceed budget targets. Monitors monthly financial reports to ensure that revenue targets are met, and expenses are controlled.
● Foster a climate of innovation to ensure the operational growth of the Club through program expansion, volunteer recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, and collaborations to meet the needs of the Community and achieve the Clubs’ operating objectives.
● Through assessment and entrepreneurial thinking, develop and enhance new and existing programs to utilize facilities on non-youth hours to develop a strong revenue-driven performance.
● Be prepared to develop and expose youth to non-traditional sports, including golf, baseball, pickleball, tennis, and others.
● Direct staff and volunteers in the development of member-focused programs and leads Club staff in the planning, development, and implementation of new program initiatives and activities.
● In collaboration with the Director of Marketing & Communications, develop branding, marketing strategies, and communications related to sports, wellness, and recreational programs and services.
● Create a member focus in all operations. Ensure that all programs represent high quality Club programs and provide experiences that exceed member expectations.
● Monitor trends and developments in markets, demographics, and community needs to ensure this department continues to deliver cost-effective programs.
● Lead by example at all times. Interact with a high level of professionalism and accountability.
● Partnering with the VP of Operations to develop and execute the capital plan, major renovations, and maintenance of athletic facilities, amenities, and program needs.
● Represent the Club and maintain appropriate relationships with area organizations, community leaders, and businesses to better serve our program participants.
● Provide reports to BGCMS committees, quality teams, senior leaders, and the cabinet
● Perform other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
● Bachelor's degree in sports management, business, recreation, or equivalent.
● 5+ of professional experience in the athletics management/camp/or program operations setting, experience in a nonprofit preferred.
● Knowledge and experience in all aspects of operations, including staff supervision and development, quality program development and implementation, volunteerism, facility and property management, and sound financial practices.
● Experience supporting and leading strategic athletic partnerships within communities.
● Ability to handle multiple demands and priorities and achieve organizational objectives.
● Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, and project management experience, including the ability to work efficiently and effectively to meet deadlines in a cross-functional, team-based environment.
● Demonstrated resource management, budgeting, and analytical skills – including the ability to compile and analyze data for planning and reporting purposes.
● Technological proficiency, including a command of the Microsoft Office Suite, and familiarity with using a database to track and extract information.
● Exemplary communication skills (written and verbal) are needed, including the ability to present in front of large groups, interact with and motivate stakeholders, represent the organization at community events and meetings, and write professionally in emails, etc.
● Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people (staff, families, youth, etc.) and a track record of building and sustaining meaningful relationships with individuals and teams from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
● Commitment to professionalism, including high expectations and standards of quality, a strong work ethic and personal code of ethics, accountability, and dependability.
● Self-motivated and goal-oriented with the ability to set effective objectives for teams and individuals and take ownership for results.
● Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, inclusiveness, and empowerment.
● Willing to provide leadership daily in a normal eight-hour day and occasional night and weekend hours. This position does not provide for remote work options.
● Certifications: As outlined in the BGCMS Training Academy upon hire or within allocated training timelines.
● This position requires a valid driver’s license and will require frequent local travel.
